Whits Rally for First Men's Soccer Victory

9/12/2009 2:00:00 PM

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- Junior transfer Chris Reid booted his first Whitman College goal six minutes into overtime to lift the men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Colorado College Saturday afternoon in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Whitman, now 1-2-1 on the season, trailed for much of the game but evened the score at 1-1 when senior Todd Wallenius scored, assisted by Reid, with less than three minutes left in regulation.

"This was a good team performance for us today," Whitman coach Mike Washington said. "The way we fought and hung in there was good."

Colorado, which slipped to 1-3-1, grabbed the early advantage on Ryan Jaeger's goal in the 31st minute of the first half.

Reid, who led all players with six shots, smacked his game-winning shot from just outside the box. His shot deflected off a Colorado defender before finding the back of the net.

The Tigers outshot Whitman 27-16, although the Missionary attack was more focused. Whitman put nine of its shots on goal, one more than Colorado. Wallenius finished with four shots and junior Beau Morton added two more.

Devin Kuh, Whitman's freshman keeper, went the distance in goal and made seven saves to earn his first college win.

"Our back line was a little flat when they scored that first goal," Washington said. "The ball was played over the top, and we didn't make the right decisions defensively."

Whitman kicks off its Northwest Conference season when it hosts George Fox and Pacific this Saturday and Sunday at the Whitman Athletic Fields. Both games are set for a 2:30 p.m. start.

"All of our non-conference games were against tough teams, but that was good for us," Washington said. "We're looking forward to the start of the conference season."
