PLU Scores Two Late Goals to Grab Victory

10/6/2013 9:27:00 PM

Box Score TACOMA, Wash. -- Whitman gave No. 6 ranked Pacific Lutheran all it could handle in the first 80 minutes of this afternoon's Northwest Conference men's soccer contest before the Lutes broke open a 1-1 tie with two goals in the last nine minutes to win 3-1.

The match which was played at PLU, saw the Lutes take the early lead when Giancarlo Santoro snuck the ball past Whitman goalkeeper Niko Contos (Jr., Boise, ID) out in front of the net and booted it in for a winner.

Whitman tied the match in the 73rd minute on Bridger Sellegren's (So., Bozeman, MT) first goal of the season. Sellegren received a feed from Logan Grime (Jr., Batesburg, SC) and netted the goal from about 10 yards out.

With less than 10 minutes remaining, Whitman goalkeeper Contos lost control of a ball and Derek Johnson snapped a shot from about 20 yards out that gave PLU the lead for good.

Just over a minute later Johnson did more damage. After receiving a pass from Santoro, Johnson cranked in a goal from about 10 yards away. Whitman managed one more shot on-goal but the save was made.

The tough-luck loss was Whitman's second in-a-row (they dropped a 1-0 decision to Puget Sound in overtime yesterday) and puts their conference record at 3-2-1 and overall mark at 3-6-2. PLU improves to 4-0-2 in the NWC and 9-0-3 on the season.

The Missionaries fired off 13 shots (4 on-goal) while the Lutes took 10 shots (6 on target).

Next Up: the Missionaries host Walla Walla University this Tuesday night at 7 pm before hosting Whitworth on Saturday, October 12, at 2:30 pm.
