FOREST GROVE, Ore. --
Sarah Anderegg scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as No. 4 ranked Whitman rolled past Pacific University this evening, 78-58, in a Northwest Conference women's basketball matchup this at Stoller Center.
Â
The victory kept the Missionaries undefeated record intact at 11-0 and improved their NWC mark to 2-0. The Boxers fall to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in conference.
Â
Pacific jumped out to an early 7-1 lead when Olivia Cook converted a layup but Whitman then went on a 9 to 2 run to capture the lead, 10-9, and was never headed. The Missionaries quickly extended the lead to six, 17-11, on a
Hailey Ann Maeda layup with 10:24 remaining in the half. The margin grew to fourteen with a bucket by
Heather Johns but the Boxers responded with two hoops and the Missionaries settled for a 10-point lead at intermission.
Â
Whitman, who shot 47% from the field, continued to control the tempo in the second half, and outside of the first three minutes of the second stanza, enjoyed a double-digit lead the rest of the way. The widest margin was 22 points with 2:31 remaining, courtesy of a Johns' layup.
Â
Pacific was led in scoring my O. Overtone-Mayorga who tallied 18. Cook added 11 and Sarah Curl tossed in 8 for the Boxers.
Â
Johns finished up with 16 and
Tiffani Traver added 13 -- nine from downtown -- to account for the Missionaries who scored in double-figures.
Â
Whitman won the rebounding edge 43 to 33 with 16 coming on the offensive end.
Â
The victory caps a very successful weekend for the Missionaries who opened the conference schedule with two road wins. Whitman bested Willamette last night 76-45.
"It was good to get a couple of road wins. Â Never an easy thing in the NWC," said Whitman head coach
Michelle Ferenz after tonight's victory.Â
Â
"I was proud of our defense this weekend," added Ferenz," and we got some great minutes from our bench. Â We need them (the bench) to step up and they did."
Â
The Missionaries, now, come home to host Puget Sound on the 10th and Pacific Lutheran University on the 11th.
