WALLA WALLA, Wash. – A dominant afternoon in time of possession and shots didn't matter on the scoreboard Sunday afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
Visiting Pacific (Ore.) University stole a 1-0 overtime victory from Whitman College in Northwest Conference men's soccer action, despite getting out shot by the host Missionaries 19-10 including a count of 4-1 in the nearly nine-minute extra period.
Throughout the afternoon Whitman piled up time working toward or in its attacking third. The first three shots of the game were by the Missionaries and at the scoreless halftime break they'd built a 6-3 edge in shots, though only one shot from each team was able to work its way close enough on frame for either goalkeeper to spring into action with saves. The Boxers' Leyton Thommasen stopped an
Eric Conte shot late in the ninth minute and six minutes later Whitman's
Stuart Ellsworth was forced to make a save on a shot from Pacific's Ian Farley.
Thommasen kept the scoreboard blank early in second-half action with a save on
Daniel Kim 96 seconds after the intermission but then the Boxers generated their first sustained presence in the Missionaries' defensive end. Eventually the Boxers worked in deep with a possession that forced Ellsworth off his line to challenge a shooter. But a quick pass to the left side left an open net for Pacific's Matt Kimball who drilled a shot inside the left post only to have Whitman's Travon Foy make a diving slide at the goal line to deflect the sure goal out of harms way and keep the scoreboard bored with its own inaction, regardless of the excitement on the pitch, other than ticking past the 61st minute.
Conte took his turn at breaking the tie in the 64th but his close-in shot on a one-on-one with Thommasen was stopped by the goalie, only to have Conte get another crack 30 seconds later with this one drifting left of the post.
Two minutes later
Bridger Sellegren forced Thomassen to add another save to his total and then in the 79th
Ben Freedman worked to the same result -- another Thommasen save on what could have been a game-winner.
Though each team had lived on the edge for a few plays in regulation, Pacific had both heels off the edge, losing its balance, too, early in the overtime period.
A nine-second sequence in the 93rd was all Whitman as
Jose Beleche got off a shot that was saved, but not controlled, by Thommasen, then
Marcos Medina registered a shot from in close that was blocked by a Pacific defender, followed by one more Medina shot that sailed tantalizingly wide of the left post.
The pressure didn't subside, either, as Whitman's
Paal Nilssen had a nice crack at a game-winner in the 96th but it, too, was wide.
Pacific finally earned its first trip down field in overtime following Nilssen's shot. The Boxers worked for a corner kick opportunity that proved harmless but they continued to pressure and picked up the game-winning goal on a header by Farley off a cross from Weli Alamillo at the 98:50 mark.
Ellsworth finished the game with a pair of saves in the loss with Thommasen registering the shutout between the pipes for Pacific after coming up with six stops.
The Missionaries' season continues Nov. 1–2 with conference road trips to Linfield College on Saturday and Willamette University on Sunday. Whitman returns home for its final game of the regular season against Whitworth University on Nov. 8.
