Box Score ASHLAND, Va. – The Whitman College men's soccer team captured its first win of the season Monday afternoon, rolling to a 3-1 victory over host Randolph-Macon (Va.) College in a non-conference match-up at R-MC Field.
Park Harmon scored the opening goal of the game to put the Missionaries on top in the first half then added an assist on what proved to be the game-winner from
Riley Paul early in the second stanza.
The victory raises Whitman's record to 1-2 while the Yellow Jackets fall to 1-2 with the loss.
Harmon's first tally of the season came in the 39th minute from
Nathanael Fleming and provided Whitman with its first lead of the season, an advantage it would take into the intermission despite getting out shot by a margin of 11-8 over the initial 45 minutes of action. Senior goalkeeper
Stuart Ellsworth kept the Yellow Jackets off the scoreboard by registering six saves including one in the final minute of the half as Randolph-Macon searched for the equalizer.
Paul knocked home the game-winner 11 minutes into second-half play, taking a feed from Harmon into the box and pounding in his first goal of the year, this one beating R-MC goalie Michael Bly to push the Whitman edge to 2-0.
Daniel Kim hooked up with Fleming six minutes later in the 63rd for Fleming's first goal of the year and a 3-0 lead.
The Missionaries were able to control possession after Randolph-Macon broke through for a goal in the 78th, limiting the Yellow Jackets to one blocked shot over the final 12 minutes. Bly kept the score locked at 3-1 as the home-team goalie came up with consecutive saves five seconds apart in the 87th against the still-swarming Whitman attack.
Ellsworth earned the win between the pipes for Whitman, finishing with 10 saves. Bly came up with five saves but surrendered all three goals to suffer the loss.
Whitman returns to the West Coast for its next match, the team's home opener on Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. against visiting Corban (Ore.) University in a non-conference game.
