WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Brianna Brown's first-half goal was the only tally in Saturday's Northwest Conference women's soccer match-up between Whitman College and visiting Willamette University as the Missionaries downed the Bearcats 1-0 on a hot afternoon at the Whitman Athletic Fields.

The shutout victory was the sixth in a row for Whitman (4-2, 2-0 NWC) over Willamette (1-5, 0-2).
Brown's marker came in the 28th minute off a cross from Emma Onstad-Hawes. Whitman made a quick transition off a Willamette turnover and possessed down the right touch line with Onstad-Hawes finally rolling into the box on the right. Her short flick across the goal found Brown uncovered seven yards out where she knocked home what would be the game-winner for Whitman.

The Missionaries carried that one-goal lead and a 3-1 advantage in shots into the halftime break, then survived a brief push from the Bearcats early in the second half before shutting down the Willamette attack over the final 31 minutes.

Whitman goalkeeper Haley Case made all three saves on the Willamette shots that made it on frame during the opening 14 minutes of second-half action. The sophomore keeper had an easier day the rest of the way as the Missionaries' midfield and defenders turned away the Bearcats attack after their final shot at the 59:02 mark.

Emily Sewell took the loss in goal for Willamette after allowing Brown's goal and coming up with one save.

Whitman continues conference action Sunday at its home pitch, welcoming Lewis & Clark College to the Athletic Fields for a noon kickoff.
