Pesky Bearcats unable to topple Whitties

SALEM, Ore. - Philip Chircu scored 16 points and Evan Martin added 15 to lead Whitman College to a 67-56 victory over host Willamette University in a Northwest Conference men's basketball game Saturday night at Cone Field House on Gordie James Court.

Martin gave the Missionaries (8-3, 2-0 NWC) an early 9-3 lead with a layin at the 17:42 mark of half one.

After relinquishing the next five points, Whitman put up 14 of the next 15 tallies to grab a 23-9 lead over the Bearcats (2-9, 0-2). Christian McDonald sank two free throws with 7:24 on the clock to bring the 14-point spread to fruition.

A 7-0 run later in the half, capped by a Martin bunny with three minutes remaining, increased Whitman's advantage to 18, 37-19.

The Missionaries led 40-27 at halftime.

Willamette closed to within four, 42-38, after a pair of Bridger Harlington freebies with 13:16 to go in the contest.

Leading 57-52 with 5:36 left, the Missionaries used a 10-4 spurt to put the pesky Bearcats away. Whitman did not allow a field goal during its final push to victory.

"Our half-court defense was phenomenal down the stretch," Whitman coach Eric Bridgeland said. "I'm very proud of our guys. Willamette is a very tough team to play on a Saturday night/back-to-back games on the road (type of situation)."

The Missionaries, who improved to 8-3 overall, continue league play Tuesday at Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
