Whitman Fights to the End; Falls 2-1

The Missionaries lost a physical contest Saturday to Pacific U. 2-1.

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – It was clear early that Saturday's Northwest Conference game between Pacific University and Whitman College was going to be a physical one at the Whitman Athletic Complex. The Boxers scored a late goal in the match that downed the Missionaries 2-1. Whitman played most of the afternoon contest on the attack and was in control for a majority of the game.

Whitman (1-9-1, 1-6-1 NWC) played outstanding throughout the whole afternoon. A few unlucky bounces that Pacific (4-8-1, 2-5-1 NWC) took advantage of proved to be the difference. The box score heavily favors the Missionaries as they outshot the Boxers 18-7, 8-2 on goal and gained eight corner kicks to Pacific's two.

Whitman played an astounding first half, taking ten shots, five on goal. The Missionaries first opportunity knocked in the eighth-minute, Park Harmon took a shot from the right side of the box, but Pacific goalkeeper, Leyton Thommasen saved the attempt and kept the score even.

Daniel Kim weaved through three Boxer defenders and connected with the net on a goal that gave Whitman a 1-0 advantage in the 24th minute. Whitman continued to played with intensity for the remainder of the half and took the one-goal advantage into the half.

Whitman had three more shots on goal in the second half, but was unable to extend its lead on Pacific. The Boxers tied the game in the 71st minute, but there was not a momentum swing in favor of Pacific. The game still seemed well within reach for the Whitties. Ten minutes after the Pacific goal, Harmon missed high on a shot that would have given the Missionaries the advantage.

Late in the match, the Boxers grabbed the lead. In the 88th minute Pacific scored to take a 2-1 advantage on a goal by Elan Yogi. Whitman's last chance to equalize came in the final seconds, but Marcos Medina's attempt at a header was knocked away by the Boxers.

The Whitties' have little time to think about today's game as they prepare for tomorrow's match-up against Pacific Lutheran University. The game is set to begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Whitman Athletic Complex.
