FOREST GROVE, Ore. – A 17-6 advantage in shots included a break-away that slipped just wide of the post and one that hit the crossbar, but Whitman College's women's soccer teams was unable to turn its dominating afternoon into a victory Saturday, closing out a double-overtime Northwest Conference contest with host Pacific (Ore.) University in a scoreless draw at Hanson Stadium.
The Missionaries (1-8-5, 1-4-5 NWC) finished the afternoon with the two best chances to break the deadlock against the Dragons (3-9-2, 3-5-2), both coming late in the contest.
Approaching the end of regulation time Whitman's
Clara Merlino collected a beautiful thru ball 40 yards out and raced in alone on Pacific goalkeeper Kailey Hifumi. The netminder came off her line strongly to limit the angle, forcing a Merlino shot that skated inches wide of the left post in the 88th minute.
A Dragons foul in the final minute allowed Whitman to push possession into its attacking end shortly before the horn. The pressure resulted in a corner kick but
Alissa Soo's shot from a Merlino cross was lifted over the crossbar and preserved the tie, sending the contest into extra time.
Pacific finally gained an edge early in the first overtime working for a pair of shots, but neither made it on frame. Late in the initial 10-minute period came the second oh-so-close moment for Whitman as
Kathleen Daly-Jensen's shot from the top of the box nailed the crossbar and caromed back out into the field of play in the 96th.
Danielle Wieck was unmarked and was able to launch a header off the rebound but the attempt was wide of the left post.
The Dragons repeated their early surge in the beginning of the second overtime, again generating a pair of shots but again the two weren't on frame. And just like in the initial extra period Whitman closed the second with two shots. Daly-Jensen's was wide left and Soo's was wide right.
The shots advantage Whitman enjoyed began early with a 5-2 margin over the opening 45 minutes. The edge in possession ballooned during the second half as the Missionaries posted eight shots while blanking their hosts.
Whitman goalie
Haley Case finished the outing making one save while Pacific's Hifumi closed her day with a pair of saves.
The weekend road trip continues Sunday for the Missionaries with an outing at George Fox University. The two teams played to a 1-1 draw earlier in the season at Whitman.
