Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Gregg Petcoff

Scoreless afternoon for Whitman & Loggers

TACOMA, Wash. - Despite a combined 27 shots on the afternoon neither Whitman College nor host University of Puget Sound were able to find netting with any of their shots in a 0-0 double-overtime draw in Northwest Conference men's soccer action at East Athletic Field.

The tie was the second of the season for Whitman (2-9-2, 2-6-2 NWC) and the first for the Loggers (9-5-1, 7-2-1) who came into the game tied for second in the league standings.

The Missionaries came close to ending the deadlock just before the horn sounded in regulation when a corner kick opportunity turned into a Paal Nilssen shot, but the scorning chance was negated with Wren Norwood's save at the 88:28 mark.

Whitman put together a strong push to net the opening goal midway through the opening 45 minutes with shots on frame from Isaac Sappington and Ben Freedman. Norwood came up with the save on the Sappington shot early in the 24th minute then was called to action again in the 30th, stopping Freedman's attempt.

The most dangerous threat to the scoreboard came in the 65th minute when a Whitman foul in the box presented Puget Sound with a penalty kick. Cameron Lorek lined up his attempt then answered the whistle with a shot toward the left side of the goal. Missionary goalkeeper Milo Cantor leaped off his mark to his right and deflected the try outside the left post to preserve the tie with the biggest save of the contest.

Though play seemed busy in front of both goalies for much of the two extra periods, only Cantor needed to come up with a save, pushing away a Brandon Gonzalez shot in the afternoon's final minute.

Whitman closed the afternoon with 15 shots to the Loggers' 12. In the nets Cantor totaled four saves with Norwood coming away with three.

The weekend on the road continues Sunday for the Missionaries who visit Pacific Lutheran University for a 2:30 p.m. conference showdown.
