WALLA WALLA, Wash. - All that was needed was one goal and Whitman College's
Park Harmon provided that marker in Wednesday's 1-0 non-conference men's soccer victory over visiting Walla Walla University under the lights at the rainy Whitman Athletic Fields. Harmon drove home a rebound only 2 minutes and 3 seconds into the contest to provide the game-winner.
Whitman (3-10-2) had numerous chances throughout the contest, tallying 34 shots to just two from Walla Walla (0-13), but Harmon's goal was the only one to find netting behind Wolves goalkeeper Josh Fry who concluded his night with 11 saves.
The Missionaries took command of the game soon after the opening kick off, driving down field and getting a shot on goal from
Gabe Jacobson 66 seconds into the contest. Fry made the save but the Wolves turned the ball over in transition out of their defensive third and Jacobsen again found the ball in his feet, pounding a shot on goal from 15 yards out less than a minute later.
Fry was in position to make the save but wasn't able to control the rebound and an unmarked Harmon was able to collect the loose ball and quickly direct it into the right side of the goal behind Fry seconds later.
Over the next minutes Fry would have to make saves on shots from Whitman's
Nathanael Fleming and then
Noah Cavanaugh to prevent Whitman from stretching its advantage on the scoreboard.
Despite the slim one-goal edge up in lights the Missionaries controlled the action on the pitch, generating shot after shot for most of the 90 minutes of wet action. Some were blocked by Walla Walla defenders, some were stopped by Fry, and others sailed left or right of the posts or over the crossbar. Not until the 37th minute did the Missionaries even surrender a shot by the Wolves and that one was wide right of the frame allowing goalie
Milo Cantor to simply act as an onlooker as it harmlessly passed well wide of the post.
Walla Walla did make a nice transition five minutes later, finding another opportunity for a shot but a Whitman defender blocked the attempt before Cantor was called into action. That shot, in the 42nd minute, would be the visitor's last of the night.
As expected, with the shots total so heavily slanted toward Whitman's advantage, possession time and corner kick opportunities -- 19 against only two by WWU -- were also weighted mightily toward the Missionaries' favor.
The evening's dominance allowed head coach
Jose Cedeno to send 20 different field players out onto the pitch with several subs logging valuable minutes for the first-year head coach.
Whitman returns to Northwest Conference play with its next outings, welcoming Willamette University to the Athletic Fields Saturday at 12 p.m. followed by a home match against Linfield College Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
