Brown's Heroics Seal Win for Whitties

Brianna Brown's goal in the 89th minute Sunday gave Whitman a 2-1 victory over Lewis and Clark.

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -Whitman College hosted Northwest Conference opponent Lewis and Clark College in the last game of the Missionaries' season Sunday afternoon. The script could not have been written much better on a day that Whitman honored its seniors in their final home game. Senior, Brianna Brown delivered the deciding goal late in the contest, sealing the 2-1 win for the Missionaries.

On a rainy afternoon with the game tied late, Brown lined up for a free kick after a Lewis and Clark (11-8-1, 7-8-1 NWC) penalty in the 89th minute. In what would prove to be her final shot as a Missionary, Brown connected with the left side of the net and secured the win for Whitman (3-11-6, 3-7-6 NWC).

There was not much action early on in the game as neither team was able to get a shot off in the first 20 minutes of the contest. Whitman goalie, Haley Case saw her first action at the 22:12 mark as she was able to collect the game's first shot on goal. The Missionaries answered the shot with four shots of their own over the span of 38 seconds. Brown delivered three headers and Alissa Soo fired a shot that Lewis and Clark goalkeeper, Sandra Alvarenga was able to save.

After firing nine shots on goal, Whitman's Chelsea Day tallied the game's first score in the 73rd minute. Saba Zewdie took a shot that Alvarenga knocked down, but was unable to collect. After gathering the ricochet, Day fired a shot past the Pio goalie and into the net giving the Missionaries a 1-0 advantage.

The Pios wasted little time sending the equalizer past Case. A mere 25 seconds after Day gave Whitman the lead, Lewis and Clark tied the game at 1-1. The Pios nearly grabbed the lead in the 82nd minute, but Case was able to gather the Pioneer shot before it got to the net.

The game seemed to be heading into an extra period for the Missionaries, who have played seven overtimes this season. However, Brown's goal lifted Whitman to victory. Whitman finished the afternoon with 12 shots on goal, twice as many as the PIos. Case collected five saves on the afternoon and seniors Brown, Kelsey Peck and Clara Merlino combined to take 12 of Whitman's 20 shots in the match.
