FOREST GROVE, Ore. – The Northwest Conference on Monday afternoon released its 2015 all-conference women's tennis team and four student-athletes from Whitman College earned recognition including player of the year
Courtney Lawless.
Also earning first-team honors with senior
Courtney Lawless is junior
Jenna Dobrin. Voted to the second team were senior
Morgan Lawless and sophomore
Allie Wallin.
Missionaries head coach
John Hein was voted by his peers as the league's coach of the year for the third consecutive season.
Hein and the quartet of all-conference players won their fourth straight NWC tournament on Saturday afternoon, downing Lewis & Clark College, 5-4, when Wallin added the fifth point by taking her three-set, tiebreaker match at No. 4 singles.
The player of the year honor is the third straight for
Courtney Lawless, only the second time in league history that a player earned three consecutive player of the year honors (Carrie Bellandi, Willamette University, 1993-1995). Monday's announcement also marks the fourth first-team selection for Courtney.
In the fall season Courtney captured the Intercollegiate Tennis Association West region singles championship and added the doubles title with sister Morgan. The doubles crown was her fourth West region championship, the last three paired with Morgan.
Playing exclusively a No. 1, singles and doubles, Courtney compiled a 7-7 record in singles and an 11-5 mark on the doubles courts, including a perfect 8-0 record within the league.
Dobrin, a second-team honoree in 2014, played singles for Whitman and posted a 7-1 record within the conference and a 9-7 mark overall, playing at the top two spots.
Morgan Lawless is 7-6 in singles play and 12-7 in doubles, including a 9-1 record against NWC opponents. Morgan captured the first singles point for Whitman Saturday in the NWC championship match after teaming with Courtney to win the first point of the day for the Missionaries during doubles action.
Wallin, depending on the strength of the Missionaries' opponent, played all the way from No. 1 to No. 5 singles for Whitman and posted an overall record of 14-7 while finishing 9-2 within the league. She also played at all three doubles spots compiling a 6-1 league mark and 8-3 overall record.
When Wallin captured the final tiebreaker point in Saturday's championship match – winning 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2) – it became the second year in a row in which her point clinched the title for Whitman after doing so in 2014 on the same court.
The inclusion of the Lawless sisters and Lewis & Clark College's Aurora and Summer Garrison on the all-conference team is believed to be the first time in conference history that two sets of sisters were tabbed for all-NWC in the same year.
