Overtime Heartbreak at Home

Whitman surrendered a two goal lead Sunday, falling to the Loggers 3-2 in overtime.

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Whitman College suffered a heartbreaking loss at home Sunday afternoon to Puget Sound. The Missionaries held a 2-0 lead midway through the first half, but unfortunately was not able to preserve the lead. The Loggers came storming back, scoring three unanswered goals; the third goal proved to be the difference in the 3-2 final.

The first half proved to be an exciting one with the Missionaries scoring early on a penalty kick by Daniel Kim. Whitman's Park Harmon drove the baseline and took a shot that was knocked down by a Puget Sound defender's hand. Kim converted the ensuing PK and Whitman led 1-0 five minutes into the game.

In the 16th minute Whitman extended its lead to two when the ball deflected off of Puget Sound's Josh Sonico and into the goal. The Missionaries seemed to be in control early, leading 2-0 and they controlled the ball for a majority for the time. Over the next 23 minutes, Whitman controlled the tempo and kept the ball on their side of the field.

However, the Loggers cut into the Whitman lead at just before the 40th minute on a goal by Sam Zisette, who received the pass from Cameron Lorek and sent the shot, passed Whitman's Milo Cantor narrowing the lead to one for the Missionaries. The game entered the break with Whitman on the right side of a 2-0 game and taking six shots on goal in the half.

In the 54th minute, the Loggers lined up for their eighth corner kick of the game, but Cantor tracked the corner into the box and caught the ball before a Puget Sound player had a chance. For a majority of the next 12 minutes, the game became much more defensive. In the 66th minute, the Loggers had a chance to tie, but the equalizer missed high.

With just under 20 minutes remaining in the game, Puget Sound tied the game at 2-2 when Ezra Kraus took a shot off a pass from Ari Taublieb and connected from the left side of the box. Whitman was granted a corner four minutes later, but was unable to regain the lead. In the 91st minute the Missionaries had a shot to pull ahead, but Kim's shot was saved by UPS goalkeeper, Daniel Kirsch.

The game remained tied at 2-2 as the game headed into overtime. The first overtime went scoreless, but in the second overtime, UPS scored in the 102nd minute. Taublieb's shot from the right side of the box found the net and completed the comeback for the Loggers.

Whitman will have a week to recover from the devastating loss and will be on the road next weekend. The Missionaries will travel to George Fox for a rare Friday game against the Bruins and Sunday will play at Pacific University.
