UT-Tyler Nips Whitties in OT

A quick overtime goal by UT-Tyler broke a scoreless tie with the Missionaries.

IRVING, Tx. – Whitman College battled the University of Texas at Tyler in a low scoring game Friday afternoon. After both teams failed to score in regulation, the game resumed in overtime where the Missionaries came up short.  The Patriots scored just over three minutes into the first overtime to seal a 1-0 victory over Whitman.

The Missionaries had multiple opportunities in the first half, taking six shots but unfortunately none of them found the back of the net. Two minutes into the game, Marcos Medina took a shot that was saved by UT-Tyler's goalkeeper, John McGuffin. The next Whitman shot came from Medina at the six minute mark, but the shot missed wide. Nathanael Fleming's two first half shots were saved by McGuffin as the Missionaries entered the half tied, 0-0.

The Patriots came out with several opportunities in the second half, but Whitman stood their ground. UT-Tyler took four shots in the first 12 minutes of the second half, but Whitman goalkeeper Milo Cantor prevented the Patriots from getting on the board. The Missionaries had their chances early on in the half as well; however, they could not find the frame.

After regulation ended, the Whitties controlled the ball early in overtime. Opportunity knocked just 52 seconds into the first overtime period when Whitman was granted a corner kick. Unfortunately, Medina's corner was not able to connect with anyone as the Patriots took control of the ball. Two minutes later Jorge Alvarado connected on a cross with Lucas Pereira that led to UT-Tyler's game-winning goal.

Whitman had another strong game in goal, this time with Cantor who faced six shots and collected five saves. The lone goal to sneak by proved to be the game-winner. The Missionaries will look to bounce back tomorrow as they play their third game in as many days. Whitman will square off against UT-Dallas Saturday at 5:30 p.m. PST.
