NEWBERG, Ore. Â A season high in total shots still wasn't enough Sunday afternoon in Northwest Conference men's soccer action as visiting Whitman had to settle for a double-overtime scoreless tie with host George Fox University, despite out shooting the Bruins by a 30-12 count.
The deadlock was the second in a row for Whitman (7-4-4, 3-2-4 NWC) which began the weekend with a 1-1 tie at Pacific (Ore.) on Friday night. George Fox, meanwhile, ends a five-game losing streak with Sunday's result to move to 1-11-2 overall and 1-7-1 in league play.
The overall shots advantage for Whitman wasn't just a series of pot shots toward the frame on Sunday. A dozen were on goal but Fox's Austin Burdick came up with stops on each of the 12. Those figures don't include the three close calls Whitman also produced.
In the 36th minute
Luca Barsher cracked one off the post to give Burdick some help, and less then three minutes later off a corner piece
Paal Nilssen was able to put a header toward goal but it clanked off the crossbar to break the hearts of Whitman again.
By the end of regulation Whitman had accumulated 24 shots, more than doubling Fox's nine.
The initial 10-minute extra period was tilted in Whitman's favor, but both of Whitman's shots were off the mark -- if only by an inch or two for one of them. In the 96th it was
Jacob Fritz's turn to tantalize his team with another crossbar moment, extending the game into a second overtime period.
This time around the shots were a little more on the mark as Burdick had to come up with a pair of saves, and at the other end of the pitch Whitman's
Owen Davis-Bower was needed for one of his four saves in the game.
Though 10 different players registered shots for Whitman it was
Ben Freedman who piled up the most with six, including a team-best four on goal.
Whitman plays its final two games at the Athletic Complex fields in its next outings. Saturday brings in the University of Puget Sound for a noontime game, followed by Sunday's match-up against Pacific Lutheran University at 2:30 p.m. A trio of road games close the season after the PLU contest.
