McMINNVILLE, Ore. On a rainy day on the slick turf of Maxwell Field, host Linfield College was able to steal a Northwest Conference men's soccer win from Whitman, upsetting the visitors by converting a penalty kick early in overtime for the only goal of the Wildcats' 1-0 victory.
Whitman (8-7-4, 4-5-4 NWC) was out shot 7-5 in the opening half by Linfield (2-14-2, 2-10-1) but dominated second-half action, registering eight shots against just two from the Wildcats.
Neither team, however, was able to generate serious scoring threats as only three of the 22 shots in regulation forced the teams' goalkeepers into action.
Jack Filipponi needed to come up with just one save over regulation time for Whitman, while Linfield net minder Jorge Rodriquez needed only two saves, both in the second half, to keep the game scoreless through 90 minutes.
Whitman had its chances, especially in the late going.
Trayvon Foy,
David Chavarin and
Collin Faunt each had looks in the final 13 minutes but Linfield defenders blocked two of those shots and the third was wide of the frame.
The game was decided 3:32 into overtime when a foul in the box was called on Whitman, setting up Linfield's Brian DeGrandmont with the chance for a game-winning kick.
DeGrandmont knocked home the winner, driving his shot low and to the right of Filipponi to lift Linfield to its first home victory of the season.
Whitman will try to slide back over into the win column with its final game of the year, at league leader Whitworth University on Saturday afternoon in Spokane, Washington.
