FOREST GROVE, Ore. Â Sunday afternoon's women's soccer season finale took extra time to decide its winner. Unfortunately for the Whitman Blues, it was host Pacific (Ore.) University that celebrated the golden goal with a score on the first shot of the second overtime period that gave the Boxers a 1-0 Northwest Conference win on their home turf at Hanson Stadium.
Whitman's season ends with a 3-11-2 mark in the league and an overall record of 3-15-2. Pacific finishes at 5-9-2 ad 7-10-3, respectively.
Sunday's game was the second overtime contest in a row for Whitman, and for the second time it was forced to try to make the most of limited opportunities on the attack.
Lena de Guzman's blocked shot in the 13th minute was the only scoring chance the Blues were able to generate in the first half.
Second-half chances were just as rare against a tight Pacific defense. In the 63rd a shot from
Naomi Lee, who had pressed up from her spot in the defensive end, drifted right of the post to allow the Boxers to keep the game scoreless.
Pacific wasn't registering much on the attack either, though starting goalkeeper
Cassidy Brewin did have to come up with three saves in the opening 45 minutes for Whitman.
In all, only 12 shots went into the book during regulation time, making the initial overtime period seem like a shootout.
Pacific cranked out two shots in that 10-minute extra period while de Guzman got off a shot for Whitman, an attempt that sailed left of the frame.
The end of the season for both teams came quickly in the second overtime stanza as Pacific's Kyra Negrete received a pass from Maria Frias and knocked home the game-winner from 10 yards out just 96 seconds into the period.
Brewin made three saves and surrendered the OT score. Fellow senior
Haley Case took over between the pipes to start the second half before ceding protection of the frame back to Brewin after 21 minutes of action.
