WALLA WALLA, Wash. Austin Betschart scored his first collegiate goal to lift Whitman College into the lead against visiting College of Idaho, but the Yotes scored a trio of unanswered goals to rally for a 3-1 non-conference victory over the Whits Sunday afternoon under sunny skies at the Athletic Fields.
The loss leaves Whitman's record at an even 3-3 while C of I improves to 2-1.
Whitman came out fast Sunday, notching a pair of corner kick chances to go along with four shots before Betschart's tally.
The second of the two corners led to the opening goal as Betschart originally rifled off a shot that was blocked by a defender but caromed out to the top of the box, right back to the first-year. Betschart followed with a left-footed shot past a sprawling Yotes goalie to light up the scoreboard in the 29th minute.
Unfortunately for Whitman the Yotes found the equalizer on a similar rebound and shot into the back of the netting just four minutes later.
A goal 29 seconds into the second half pushed C of I in front and seven minutes later the Yotes scored the back breaker.
Whitman put pressure on the defense of the Yotes over the final 20 minutes, accumulating three shots and five set pieces from the corner but C of I was able to dismiss each attempt to hold on for the victory.
Jack Filipponi made three saves for Whitman in the second half but surrendered two goals to the Yotes in taking the loss. At the other end of the pitch C of I's Grant Billings picked up the win in goal after collecting two saves.
With its non-conference portion of the schedule complete Whitman embarks on its Northwest Conference slate beginning with its next game, a home contest Saturday at 12 p.m. against visiting Linfield College.
