ORANGE, Calif. Â Increasing pressure in its attacking end in the second half turned up the heat, but Whitman College's men's soccer team wasn't able to overcome an early penalty-kick score from host Chapman University Monday afternoon in a 1-0 non-conference loss to the Panthers on their home turf at Wilson Field.
The loss was the first of the season for Whitman (2-1) while Chapman improved to 2-0.
Whitman and Chapman both had a select few scoring chances over the course of the game, with Whitman getting all four of its shots on goal during the final 45 minutes. Each time, though, Panthers goalkeeper Matt Deemer was able to come up with a save to allow his team to cling to it's tenuous lead.
The only score in the contest came from Chapman's Sam Rudich who converted his PK attempt in the game's 22nd minute to stake the home team to an early lead. Five of the Panthers' nine shots in the opening half came before the PK shot. From that point forward Whitman matched Chapman shot for shot.
The Whitman attack pressed until the end as
Gabe Jacobson's shot in the 83rd was saved by Deemer and
Eric Conte's shot in the 85th skipped wide of the post.
Starter
Owen Davis-Bower (1-1) was perhaps unjustly saddled with the loss in goal for Whitman, making one stop in the half but also the victim of the PK attempt.
Jack Filipponi took over between the pipes to start the second half and recorded three saves. At the other end of the pitch Chapman starting goalie Sean Augustine earned the victory without making a stop leaving Deemer, who stepped in goal after the halftime break, to make four saves to hold the Whitman attack at bay.
Its Southern California trip complete, Whitman returns to Walla Walla for its home opener Friday at 7 p.m. against visiting Northwest University under the lights at the Athletic Fields.
