Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Gregg Petcoff

Unbeaten weekend after win at Linfield

McMINNVILLE, Ore.  Whitman finished off an unbeaten weekend Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 victory over host Linfield College in Northwest Conference men's soccer action at Maxwell Field. Noah Cavanaugh and Austin Betschart scored second-half goal for the Blues and goalkeeper Matt Reich made four saves in the shutout win.

Sunday's triumph completes a season sweep of the Wildcats (2-10-0, 0-8-0 NWC) and allows Whitman (4-7-2, 3-3-2) to close the weekend without a loss, after tying league leader Willamette University on Saturday.

There was more action Sunday than in Saturday's double-overtime battle -- a total of 22 shots in the 110-minute contest -- as the Blues rang up 20 shots against the Wildcats while the home team registered 14.

But not until the 72nd minute was the scoreboard tasked with anything but ticking time away.

Six minutes prior Cavanaugh had a great look on frame and unleashed a shot that tantalized, but Linfield keeper Nick Van Kleef gained position to come away with the stop. The next time around Van Kleef wasn't so lucky as CJ Fritz slotted a pass across the top of the box to Cavanaugh who launched his opportunity from 20 yards out into the netting behind Van Kleef.

As if the dam had broken, Whitman attacking pressure increased and resulted in the game's second tally. Blues possession deep in the box put the ball in Erik Nielsen's feet from where he was able to slide a pass across to the left where Betschart slid a touch into the bottom left corner where it grazed the post before slipping behind Van Kleef.

Van Kleef ended the afternoon with five saves but the Cavanaugh and Betschart goals would be blemishes from which his team wasn't able to recover.

The Blues play host for their next two matches, taking on Pacific Lutheran University and University of Puget Sound on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, at the Whitman Athletic Fields.
