Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Gregg Petcoff

Wildcats hold off Blues

McMINNVILLE, Ore.  Linfield College's host Wildcats were able to keep Whitman College off the scoreboard Sunday afternoon in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match, upending the visiting Blues by a count of 4-0 at the Linfield Soccer Field.

Whitman slips to 1-6-1 within the league and 1-10-1 overall while the home victory lifts Linfield to 4-3-1 and 6-5-1, respectively.

Goalkeeper Allie Seracuse came up with five stops for the Blues, but the Wildcats were able to generate consistent pressure in their attacking third to the tune of 19 shots, nine of which were on goal.

At the opposite end of the pitch Whitman's best chance early was a header from Sophie Brussell in the 21st minute. Midfielder Quinne Woolley gained possession back in her own end and was able to drive deep into the Linfield defense, setting up in the right corner where she snapped a cross into the box. Brussell got a bead on the pass and put a good strike on the ball, only to see it skim by the right post past a thankful Madi Reimer who had followed the cross too far, showing a lot of net behind her for Brussell.

The Woolley/Brussell chance would have been the equalizer but Whitman was at least happy to walk into the halftime break trailing by only one goal, scored in the eighth minute by Linfield's Kristen Burke.

That narrow deficit increased early in the second, however, as the Wildcats found the net in the 51st, then added another from Burke in the 58th. They would up the lead once more, with a marker two minutes later.

The Blues' Chelsea Day got untracked after that Wildcat score, getting shots on net in the 66th and 77th that forced Reimer into action, but Whitman wasn't able to light up the scoreboard in falling to the home team.

The Blues are on the road for their next games, a pair of league matches, taking on host Lewis & Clark College on Saturday and host Willamette University on Sunday.
