Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Gregg Petcoff

Career day for Cavanaugh in defeat

NEWARK, N.J. Whitman College defender Noah Cavanaugh scored each of the Blues' goals Sunday against Drew (N.J.) University, but the Rangers overcame Cavanaugh's career day to steal a 3-2 non-conference victory in men's soccer action at the Brick City Classic.

Cavanaugh's two first-half goals on Sunday equaled his best single-season total and allowed the Blues (1-4) to head into the halftime break deadlocked at 2-2 with the Rangers (4-0-1).

Drew found its eventual game winner nine minutes into second half action on a through ball into the box for Andy Imoh, who was able to chip his unencumbered shot past Whitman goalkeeper Jack Filipponi.

The Blues registered the next three shots of the game -- all on frame -- but weren't able to push another past Drew goalie Jason Adamo. Jimmy Jacobson had a look at an equalizing goal in the 68th that Adamo stopped; CJ Fritz was dealt the same fate in the 82nd; and Gabe Jacobson's header early in the 89th was plucked from the air by Adamo to preserve the Rangers' lead.

The first of Cavanaugh's markers came early in the game when he converted a free-kick opportunity just shy of the four-minute mark.

Drew pulled even nine minutes later, but Cavanaugh pushed Whitman back in front in the 32nd. Joe Wally slotted a through ball into the top of the box that Cavanaugh collected and, like Imoh's winning goal, poked an undefended shot into the upper-left corner for a 2-1 lead.

One minute later, though, the Rangers found their second of the game to knot the score up at 2-2.

First-year Matt Reich got his initial career start in goal for Whitman on Sunday, coming up with two saves against two goals allowed, then gave way to Filipponi at the start of the second half. Filipponi ended his afternoon with one save and the one goal allowed.

In the overall stats, Whitman generated more shots, 13-11, more shots on goal, 8-6, and more corner kick opportunities, 6-4, but Adamo's six saves proved to be the difference maker.

After host Rutgers-Newark's late game victory over Elmhurst College, both Cavanaugh and CJ Fritz were announced as members of the Brick City All-Classic team.

The Blues come back across the country to their home pitch for their next game, the Northwest Conference opener Saturday against George Fox University. Another league contest, against visiting Pacific (Ore.) University, follows on Sunday afternoon.
