TACOMA, Wash. Whitman men's soccer hammered away in its attacking third late in the second half, but a converted penalty kick in the contest's opening minutes by host University of Puget Sound proved to the game-winner in the Loggers' 1-0 Northwest Conference victory Saturday at Baker Stadium.
The Blues (2-6, 1-2 NWC) commanded possession over the final 25 minutes of action, peppering away at the UPS (4-2, 2-1) net with five of the last six shots of the game, many coming off corner-kick chances.
At one point Whitman teed it up in the corner three times within a 65 second span, which were the first of the final six corner chances of the game, all from the Whitman attack.
Gabe Jacobson's header over the crossbar with four minutes remaining, off a corner from
Noah Cavanaugh, was the last gasp on frame for the Blues, though they did generate two more corner chances.
The game was decided on the PK chance in the ninth minute. A Whitman foul in the right corner of the box put the Loggers' Vincent Luehrte at the 12-yard spot, where he buried his opportunity into the upper-left corner of the frame for a precarious one-goal advantage.
Blues goalkeeper
Owen Davis-Bower was perfect after that, finishing the game with three saves.
Puget Sound goalie Robert Jorgensen needed only one save for the win, but he and his teammates in the defensive end were harassed at an increasing rate as the second half wore on, eventually hanging on for the win.
Whitman continues its weekend on the road with a league match Sunday at Pacific Lutheran University.
