Seracuse racks up 8 saves at Fox

NEWBERG, Ore. Allie Seracuse made eight saves Sunday afternoon at George Fox University, but the sophomore goalkeeper wasn't able to stop all of the Bruins' 23 shots as host Fox came away with a 4-0 victory over Whitman in Northwest Conference women's soccer action at the Austin Sports Complex.

The Blues (1-6-1, 1-2-1 NWC) were coming off a second-half rally from two down in a Saturday draw, but at Fox (4-3-0, 2-2-0) they were only able to register three shots total, and only one on goal.

Both teams had early opportunities thwarted by goalies, the goal frame, or both.

Seracuse made the first save of the game on a Jayli Miyamoto shot early in the fifth minute, then one minute later gave thanks to the frame as a Kylie Louis shot clanged off the crossbar.

Turnabout was fair play, however, as Whitman's Eliza Van Wetter rocked the post in the ninth minute, to the assured delight of Fox goalie Kelsey Kammerzell.

Three more times over the next 19 minutes Seracuse would come up with stops to keep the scoreboard from changing, but a corner kick chance in the 35th ruined the streak.

Allie Day's corner kick traveled to the back post where a Fox header sailed wide, but not out of play. The Bruins' Kayla Caldeira was able to beat her defender to the loose ball, and she was then able to feed Madison Hueser who slotted a shot into the right side of the net to break the ice.

Trailing only 1-0 at the intermission, the Blues hoped to recover some of the magic that turned Saturday's two-deficit into an eventual double-overtime tie. Van Wetter launched a shot on frame 27 seconds into second-half action, but Kammerzell was there for the save.

Four minutes later a header by Caldeira off a corner kick chance made the score 2-0 in favor of the home team, who would add a third goal in the 62nd and one more in the closing minute for the game's final tally.

Seracuse made four saves in each half, falling one short of a career high from earlier in the season.

Whitman is back on its home pitch for the squad's next two games, entertaining Pacific Lutheran University on Saturday and University of Puget Sound on Sunday.
