MAHWAH, N.J.  Wile E. Coyote may never have earned his prize, but Whitman College's men's soccer team certainly did as the Blues dominated possession and earned their first win of the season by tripping up the host Ramapo College Roadrunners, 1-0, in a non-conference match-up Thursday on the home team's Athletic Center pitch.
The important number on the scoreboard may have only displayed a one-goal victory, but Whitman (1-2) controlled the game from the start.
Peter Stephens scored on the third shot of the game, converting a set piece off a corner kick from teammate
Gabe Jacobson early in the 10th minute. The marker was Stephens' first collegiate goal.
Ramapo (1-1) registered one of those early shots, but did little else in its attacking third as Whitman's possessive attack, efficient midfield transitions and strong defense limited the Roadrunners to just three more shots -- only one of which made it on frame, where Blues goalkeeper
Owen Davis-Bower deftly came up with the save late in the opening half.
Whitman accumulated 23 shots overall and 9 shots on goal, keeping Ramapo goalie Ryan Sprague busy throughout the contest. Davis-Bower simply directed traffic in the second half as the Blues pounded out 14 of their 23 shots during the final 45 minutes, while allowing only a shot over the crossbar in the 65th.
The New Jersey expedition continues Saturday with a non-conference game at Rutgers-Newark, followed by a contest Sunday against Drew University at the same site.
