WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Peter Stephens scored a goal and assisted on another to help the Whitman College men's soccer team to a resounding 4-0 Senior Day win in Northwest Conference action Saturday at the Whitman Athletic Field.
Prior to the game the Blues (8-6-3, 7-3-2 NWC) honored their lone senior goalkeeper Aidan Nuttall for his contributions to Whitman soccer. Nuttall would see action for a good chunk of the second half, keeping a clean sheet while making one save in an overall solid performance. Starter Matt Reich posted a save of his own with GFU (2-11-3, 1-8-3 NWC) keeper Cole Benton making five saves in 90 minutes of action.
The Blues dominated much of the first half but a couple of Bruin counter attacks led to a few chances on goal. Whitman finally broke through with 10 minutes to play. Solid possession on the right flank helped Alex Cooper deliver a perfect ball to Peter Stephens who volleyed the cross home.
CJ Fritz gave the Blues a 2-0 lead with his goal in the 55th minute. Fritz dribbled into the box and, after his initial strike was saved by Benton, followed up and finished for Whitman's second goal.
Erik Nielsen all but put the game out of reach with just over 20 minutes play. Benton punched out a flank service which soon found Nielsen's foot about 25 yards outside the box. He ripped a shot that dipped just under the crossbar beyond Benton's outstretched hand.
The Blues continue conference play tomorrow when they host Pacific at 2:30 p.m.
