Men's Soccer Tops Whitworth, Claims Share of NWC Title

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - David Chavarin scored early in the second half with what proved to be the gamewinner, Oscar Harding sealed the win with a goal just before full time and the Whitman College men's soccer team clinched a share of the Northwest Conference title on the final day of the season with a 3-1 win over Whitworth, Saturday night at the Whitman Athletic Fields.

Coupled with Pacific Lutheran and Willamette's losses today, the win pulled the Blues into a tie with PLU in the final standings. By virtue of head-to-head records, PLU receives the leagues automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Northwest Conference title is the first for the men's soccer program since winning it outright in 1981.

The first half was played at a very frenetic pace with both teams early on getting possession in each other's half until Whitman broke through in the 35th minute. Sam Johnson played Jacob Barsher an easy ball back just outside the penalty area, one he collected and chipped over the head of Whitworth keeper Jesus Nunez into the back side netting.

The Blues carried the lead and momentum into halftime but it were the Pirates that struck early in the second half with the equalizer. Whitworth (5-11-4, 4-7-3 NWC) drew a corner kick which was dangerously driven right in front of the goal mouth. After an initial save from Matt Reich, who had spelled Owen Davis-Bower at the break, Clifford Britton slotted the rebound into the back of the net.

David Chavarin returned the favor just moments later. Barsher had a chance for a shot inside the penalty area but found Chavarin who shot low and hard inside the right far post to put the Blues back in front. With time dwindling, Whitworth put everything it had into netting an equalizer, leading to a Whitman counter attack by Peter Stephens who raced down the right flank and found an open Johnson who punctuated the win with a goal.

Nunez finished the match with six saves for the Pirates with Davis-Bower and Reich combining for the shutout.

The win caps an impressive season that saw the Blues live up to their billing as the NWC's preseason favorite to win the league. Whitman finishes the season 10-6-2 overall and 9-3-2 in the Northwest Conference.
