Bench Scoring Paces No. 6 Whitman Past Pacific In NWC Opener

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Michael Gutierrez delivered a game-high 19 points off the bench, Bryce Mulder added 18 points and five rebounds and the Whitman College men's basketball team took down Pacific (Ore.) in resounding fashion with a 128-83 win in the Northwest Conference opener for both teams on Friday at the Sherwood Center.

Jack Stewart added a solid overall game for Whitman (5-1, 1-0 NWC) who rebounded nicely after suffering their first loss nearly a week ago. His six points, game-high eight rebounds and three assists  helped the Blues to a 70-point first half, their largest single half scoring output this season.

Terrence Gilder and Davis both had 11 points and four rebounds to lead Pacific's balanced scoring effort. Brevin Brown and Gage Shelmidine each added 10 points.

The first half opened a bit ragged but the Blues quickly exerted their dominance. Ben Beatie's jumper capped an early 9-0 run to help Whitman to a 17-7 lead just over five minutes into the game. Joseph Ceballos-Espetia's three pointer for Pacific (3-3, 0-1 NWC) kept the deficit at eight, but the Blues would uncorked 11 straight points which ended up being a 28-5 run to put Whitman well in front.

The lead continued to swell when Jase Harrison drained a three pointer to put his team up 30 points at 56-26. Andrews Vickers heated up toward the end of the half, throwing down a dunk before completing an and-one three point play to push the lead to 35 points.

A handful of other Blues players got in on the action in the second half. Robert Colton's steal and two-handed flush put the Blues up by 36 then Andrew Harvey drained a corner three pointer to keep it rolling for the Blues.

Vickers and Kanoa Johnson both put up 11 points with Vickers adding seven boards.

The Blues are right back at it tomorrow against Willamette. Tipoff at the Sherwood Center is set for 6:00 p.m.
