No. 4 Men's Basketball Tops Alma To Close Wooster Tournament

MESA, Ariz. - Joey Hewitt led all scorers with 20 points, Austin Butler flirted with a triple double with nine points, eight rebounds and eight assists and the No. 4 Whitman College men's basketball team closed the Wooster Tournament with a 101-82 win over Alma College, Wednesday at Mesa Community College.

Darne Duckett added 16 points off the bench for the Blues who improved to 8-1 overall after picking up a pair of wins in as many games at the tournament. Jack Stewart contributed 14 points and Cedric Jacobs-Jones added 11 more.

Cole Kleiver led the Scots (0-9) with 15 points and six rebounds with Kyle Woodruff adding 14 points including 4-6 from beyond the arc.

Stewart's three pointer with 13:13 to play in the first half ignited a run that put the Blues ahead by a comfortable margin. Whitman reeled off 10 straight points to take a 22-11 lead approaching the midway point of the first half.

Stewart would nail another from long distance to put his team up 12 points, but Alma would cut the lead to as few as five points on a Jamie Lewis jumper. A subsequent 8-0 Whitman run pushed the advantage to 13, its largest of the half, before heading to the break with a 47-37 lead.

The Blues lead tinkered around 10 points in the second half until an 8-0 run, capped by a Jase Harrison three pointer, gave his team a 76-56 lead with 11:07 remaining. The advantage swelled to as many as 24 points after a pair of Jacobs-Jones free throws before the Blues cruised to the 19-point victory.

Whitman returns to the court for a pair of games just before the new year. The Blues travel down the coast for the Cal Lu Tourney for games against Illinois Wesleyan (Dec. 28) and host Cal Lu (Dec. 29).
