SALEM, Ore. Whitman's 27th-ranked women's tennis team completed a weekend sweep of road competition, downing host Willamette University, 9-0, Sunday afternoon in opening its Northwest Conference slate with a win over the Bearcats.
The Blues (2-3, 1-0 NWC) on Saturday blanked Hardin-Simmons (Texas) University in a non-conference, neutral-site match and carried that momentum into Sunday's NWC match against Willamette (2-1, 0-1).
Like with the match the day before, Whitman broke in front Sunday with a sweep of the doubles matches, and then finished off the singles matches with straight-set victories.
The clinching point came at No. 4 singles with
Anastasiya Redkina's 6-0, 6-1 victory over Sylvia Marr.
Redkina had earlier teamed with
Kattie Pak at No. 3 doubles to record the Blues' first point of the day, an 8-0 victory over Siena Ginsburg and Alexis Gjurasic.
Lori Sheng and
Jenna Gilbert posted the quickest wins of the day during singles play. Sheng posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5, and Gilbert won 1 and 0 at No. 6.
Whitman continues conference play next weekend with a visit to Linfield College on Saturday and to Pacific (Ore.) University the following afternoon.
