Full roster takes care of Pacific

FOREST GROVE, Ore.  Whitman was so dialed in so many ways, Eric Bridgeland probably could have named his final score.

The head coach of the top-ranked Blues opted instead for a roster roll-call, entrusting the bulk of the second half to his newest players in a 112-69 victory over Pacific on Saturday in Forest Grove that clinched Whitman (21-0, 12-0 in NWC) a conference tournament berth.

First-year Darné Duckett led all scorers with 23 points -- his most prolific conference tally and two points off his career high -- as the Blues led by at least 43 points over the final 18 minutes of the game. Sophomore reserves Trevor Osborne (14 points) and Jaron Kirkley (11 points) also had strong games off the Whitman bench, which scored 71 points.

Everyone in uniform played at least 11 minutes in the Blues' 36th consecutive regular-season conference win. Whitman scored 50 points in the first 15 minutes of the game, essentially clinching the win with 21 unanswered points midway through the first half.

It had a 50-point lead in the second half before Pacific (11-10, 5-7) had cracked the 30-point barrier.

"It's no secret: we don't drop off a whole bunch," Bridgeland said. "There's a couple of guys that don't play a ton, and these kinds of games are great for them. It's hard to keep everyone fresh, because we're so deep."

"I told the guys, 'You're so fun to watch.' They just compete. We were closing out and challenging every shot. Just doing what we do."

Whitman absolutely -- and democratically -- dismantled Pacific in the first half. Eleven different Blues scored. Ten played at least eight minutes. Six scored five or more points. Eight had at least one steal.

"We had some fun," said Bridgeland.

Osborne's four-point play -- he splashed a 3-pointer while getting fouled, then hit the free throw -- was the spiciest meatball in Whitman's 21-0 feast bridging the midpoint of the first half. Seven different Blues scored during the game-deciding run, which left Whitman leading 42-16 with 8:27 left in the first half. Osborne hit two more 3-pointers and Jack Stewart one as the Blues scored 10 unanswered points to take a 58-20 lead at the 3:17 mark.

Whitman dished 13 assists on 25 first-half baskets. It out-rebounded the Boxers 24-19, forced 18 turnovers, and held Pacific to 31.3 percent shooting. It had 10 steals.

Individual first-half highlights included Osborne, who had 14 points on 4-of-6 3-point shooting, Stewart (nine points on 3-of-5 shooting from deep), and Robert Colton (eight points on 4-of-4 shooting from the field). Tim Howell had five assists and Stewart four. The Blues shot 56.8 percent from the field before halftime.

Joey Hewitt scored 15 points in the game, including 10 in a 12-4 Blues run to begin the second half -- and banish any prayer of a Pacific comeback. He made 5 of 8 shots, including 3 of 4 3-pointers.

Howell scored nine points. Duckett added five rebounds, a team-high four of Whitman's 15 steals, and three assists.

"Darné was really, really good," said Bridgeland. "Darné and Jaron were special tonight. Trevor shot it well. Cedric has been good. Jack got us going early, and Joey was great at the start of the second half."

Whitman plays fifth-ranked Whitworth at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Spokane.
