WALLA WALLA, Wash. Victories in the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles slots handed host Whitman a lead it wouldn't relinquish during the 29th-ranked Blues' 7-2 victory over No. 30 Lewis & Clark College on Sunday in Northwest Conference women's tennis action at the Whitman Courts.
Mary Hill and
Anastasiya Redkina earned an 8-3 win at 2-doubles for the first point of the morning, and the All-American (ITA) duo of
Hanna Greenberg and
Andrea Gu added the second point with their 8-4 triumph at No. 1.
The Pioneers avoided a sweep by taking the 3-doubles point, but the next five results -- all in singles action -- each tilted Whitman's way to clinch the match.
Redkina downed L&C's Madelyn Landerfelt, 6-2 and 6-1, at 5-singles to start the Whitman run.
In succession, Hill at No. 1 (1 and 1),
Jenna Gilbert at No. 6 (1 and 2),
Lori Sheng at No. 4 (2 and 1), and Greenberg at No. 3 (3-6, 6-1, 1-0(5)) added to the cushion after Redkina's win.
"Today we had so many great performances," beamed head coach
John Hein. "I was really proud of everyone, especially how Jenna and Lori rebounded from doubles (the lone Pios doubles point).
"This is a fun way to roll into spring break," he added.
The Blues head to Southern California for their spring break trip, during which they will play four matches. Over the span of five days (March 14-18) Whitman will square off with Vassar (N.Y.) College, No. 18 Trinity (Texas) University, Cal Lutheran, and No. 7 Tufts (Mass.) University.
