Selznick begins nationals in IM

INDIANAPOLIS  Whitman College's Mara Selznick on Wednesday began her participation in the NCAA 2018 Division III Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, placing 47th in the preliminary heats of the women's 200-yard individual medley at the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Aquatic Center.

The four-day championship meet runs Wednesday through Saturday with prelim heats beginning at 10 a.m. ET from which the top 16 swimmers advance into 6 p.m. ET consolation and championship heat finals.

Selznick posted a 200 IM time of 2 minutes, 10.92 seconds at the IUPUI pool, a little more than one second over the school-record time (2:09.12) she registered in finishing fourth at the 2018 Northwest Conference Championship meet, won by the Whitman women for the second consecutive season.

Wednesday's swim went out similarly to her IM swim at the conference meet as Selznick hit the pad after the butterfly leg in 26.90 seconds, compared to her 26.67 split at NWC's. The backstroke leg in Indy, 31.90, was behind her conference-meet split (30.86) but Selznick made up ground in the breaststroke with a split in Indy of 39.95, versus her 40.32 split at conference. She then brought the race home in 32.17 seconds Wednesday after finishing the freestyle split at the conference meet in 31.27.

Selznick's meet continues Thursday morning with the prelims of the 100 butterfly. The sophomore is seeded 43rd with a time of 1:00.17.
