SEATTLE, Wash. Though Whitman's women's tennis team is ranked 32nd nationally in Division III, some divide still exists within the NCAA's divisions as D-I Seattle University downed the Blues, 7-0, Saturday afternoon on the SU Tennis Courts in non-conference action.
The loss evens the Blues' season mark at 7-7 while the Redhawks climb up to 7-11 overall.
Using the D-I format, the three doubles matches counted for just one point -- in D-III each match, singles and doubles, counts for one point -- and the Redhawks earned that point with a sweep of the doubles bouts.
Anastasiya Redkina and
Kattie Pak pushed their SeattleU opponents hard, though, before falling 7-5 at the No. 3 position.
Andrea Gu and
Jenna Gilbert teamed up at 2-doubles and also played well before succumbing, 6-4, to Seattle's tandem.
In the singles matches, Gu gave All-Western Athletic Conference player Michelle Lui all she could handle at No. 1.
The senior Lui needed extra sets to earn a 7-5 win over Gu in the opening set, and had to battle the Whitman sophomore in the second set before closing out the match with a 6-4 win.
Seattle also won the other five singles matches in straight sets, but Redkina at No. 4, Pak at No. 5 and Gilbert at No. 6 each took five games from their D-I opponents.
Whitman jumps back into D-III and Northwest Conference competition with its next matches, welcoming Pacific Lutheran University and University of Puget Sound to the Whitman courts on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
