WALLA WALLA, Wash. Senior day for
Hanna Greenberg and
Jenna Gilbert proved to be a celebratory Sunday for the Whitman pair as the 32nd-ranked Blues downed visiting University of Puget Sound, 9-0, in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match.
Greenberg and Gilbert began the day by earning doubles points for Whitman (8-8, 6-1 NWC). Greenberg partnered with
Andrea Gu to earn Sunday's initial point with an 8-0 win at the No. 1 doubles slot, and soon after Gilbert closed out an 8-2 win with
Kattie Pak at No. 3. In between,
Mary Hill and
Lori Sheng smoked an 8-2 win at 2-doubles to help set up the Whitman sweep.
After
Anastasiya Redkina rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 win at 4-singles for a fourth Whitman point, Greenberg added the match-clinching tally with a 1 and 2 win at No. 3.
Gu won an exciting three-setter at No. 1 and Sheng added a straight-set victory at No. 2 for the Blues' sixth and seventh points, and then Gilbert and Pak added their own straight-set wins at Nos. 6 and 5, respectively, to complete the shutout triumph over the Loggers (4-6, 3-4).
Heading into the final regular-season NWC match Saturday at Whitworth University, Gilbert and Greenberg have been part of a Whitman squad that over four years has compiled a stunning 39-4 conference mark while also capturing a pair (2017, 2015) NWC tournament titles.
A win at Whitworth assures the Blues of a second-place seed entering the conference tournament, hosted by the regular season champion on April 21 and 22.
