8/31/2018 5:50:00 PM

Box Score CHICAGO, Ill. – The Whitman College women's soccer team played the nation's No. 2 team to a near even contest in the first half, but gave up four second-half goals en route to a 5-0 opening day loss at the University of Chicago on Friday at Stagg Field.

Bryanna Schreiber had a busy afternoon between the pipes, dealing with 17 shots while making 12 saves in 90 minutes of action. Whitman would muster only three shots for the match forcing substitute goalkeeper Sydney Jones to make the only save of the afternoon.

The Blues played the Maroons tough in the first half, not breaking until Hannah Watkins scored for Chicago in the 38th minute.

Chicago scored its second in the 52nd minute on an unassisted goal from Adrianna Vera but the Blues wouldn't let the floodgates open just yet. Midway through the second half though, Chicago scored a trio of goals within a 10-minute span to complete the scoring. Watkins assisted on the third and in the 68th minute, scored her second.

The Blues remain in the windy city for one more match, a Monday, Sept. 2 contest at the Illinois Institute of Technology. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. CT.
