Blues Bounce Back, Earn Hard-Fought Win Over Puget Sound

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Peter Stephens converted on a penalty kick late in the first half which proved to be the gamewinner as the Whitman College men's soccer team bounced back from its first conference loss to earn a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the University of Puget Sound, Sunday afternoon in Northwest Conference action at the Whitman Athletic Fields.

With the win, the Blues improve to 4-4 overall but more importantly remain near the top of the conference with a 3-1 league record. Both teams had opportunities to score in the first half but when Stephens converted his spot kick after Whitman drew a foul in the penalty area with under two minutes remaining, the Blues had all the scoring they needed.

Owen Davis-Bower made four saves in net for the Blues and effectively came off his line to thwart a handful of goalscoring opportunities from the Loggers (3-4-1, 1-2-1 NWC). Wren Norwood posted four saves for UPS.

Whitman maintained control in the second half, with Davis-Bower saving another shot five minutes into the frame to keep the Loggers off the board.

Whitman had several opportunities to increase its lead in the second half. Both Erik Nielson and Reese Owens had excellent chances in front of the UPS net but were unable to finish.

Late in the game it were the Blues who slowed down the pace and preserved the 1-0 win, their third league shutout in four games.

The Blues now open a three-game conference road stint beginning with Linfield on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 2:30 p.m.
