Women's Soccer Falls At League Leader Willamette

SALEM, Ore. – Elly Wolfe equaled a career high with eight saves but in came in a losing effort as the Whitman College women's soccer team lost its second of back-to-back games, a 2-0 defeat at league-leading Willamette University on Sunday in Northwest Conference action at Sparks field.
 
The deck was stacked against the Blues (1-8-1, 1-5 NWC) who hung in there against the undefeated Bearcats (9-0-1, 5-0-1 NWC). Whitman nearly got through the first half unscathed but a Willamette goal with just over five minutes to play sent the Bearcats to the break up a goal. Sydney Wilson scored off an assist from Amanda Fong for the lone first-half goal.
 
The Blues did have several scoring opportunities during the half with Sofia Ellington, and Kate Prudent and Renee van Bergeijk off the bench, all having bids on net. Bearcat keeper Kristen Barkley was equal to the task each time in preserving the shutout.
 
Whitman posted seven shots overall with Willamette recording 16.
 
Whitman held Willamette to just the one goal until the 82nd minute. Sydney Wilson netted her second of the afternoon to put her team up 2-0 and all but seal the win.
 
The Blues are next in action on Saturday, Oct. 6 hosting Lewis & Clark at the Whitman Athletic Fields. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
