Men's Soccer Tops Pacific (Ore.) For Fourth Straight Win

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College men's soccer team scored early and finished late en route to its fourth straight victory, a 2-0 win over Pacific (Ore.) in Northwest Conference action Saturday at the Whitman Athletic Complex.

Amidst windy, rainy and chilly conditions, the Blues (9-5, 6-2 NWC) earned their first goal as part of a dominant first 30 minutes. Jourdan Furukawa's shot inside the six was saved by Boxer keeper Jack Cuevas, but rebounded right back to Furukawa's foot. The first year forward then slipped a ball central which Adam Joss rocketed inside the upper left corner.

The Blues continued to dominate but were just not able to find the back of the net. Pacific took advantage of the missed opportunities to withstand the extended storm and create several scoring chances of their own. Nothing materialized for either team as the Blues carried the one-goal lead into the break.

Pacific had a few chances on goal early in the second half but Whitman had the lionshare of the possession and chances the rest of the way. 

The Blues finally put the game away with a goal in the 70th minute. Jacob Barsher slipped a short ball just behind the Pacific defense which Austin Betschart finished past Cuevas.

Owen David-Bower (4 saves) played a solid game in earning the shutout in goal for the Blues. Cuevas made three saves on 14 Whitman shots.

Late in the game, Peter Stephens and Jadon Bachtold had excellent chances on goal with Oscar Harding seeing his free kick bounce off the crossbar out of bounds.

The Blues return to action on Sunday against George Fox. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m.
