Women's Soccer Comes Up Short Against PLU

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College women's soccer team took on the league's best, going toe-to-toe for much of the game but ultimately falling to Pacific Lutheran 2-0 in Northwest Conference action Sunday at the Whitman Athletic Complex.

The Blues (1-12, 1-9 NWC) gave up both goals in the first half but held the Lutes (9-3-1, 10-0 NWC) scoreless in the final 45. Cassidy Crosswhite made seven saves for the Lutes in recording the shutout with Allie Seracuse posting five in a solid effort for Whitman. The Blues and Lutes were even in the shot department, both with nine total and seven on target.

PLU got on the board first with a goal in the 13th minute. Maddie Landreth got control of the ball about 25 yards out from goal and bent her shot into the upper right corner just over Seracuse's outstretched arm.

Whitman was unlucky not to score in the later stages of the half, forcing Crosswhite into two stellar saves. Dani Espinoza's free kick appeared headed into the side netting before Crosswhite deflected it wide. Moments later, Carolina Gonzalez dribbled through the teeth of the PLU defense and forced Crosswhite to come off her line and make a kick save to turn away another Whitman scoring opportunity.

The Lutes got their second just before halftime to enter the break with a two-goal lead. Danielle Lisk drove from the right flank and inside the penalty area, finding Savannah Brown who redirected the cross into the side netting.

Whitman played PLU fairly even in the second half and several excellent chances on goal. None would find the back of the net however.

The Blues hit the road this week for a Wednesday contest at Whitworth. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
