Whitman College is home to one of the top outdoor tennis facilities in the region. In fall of 2013, the college unveiled the renovated facility that houses six newly surfaced courts and a new lighting system. In addition, a new drainage system was installed to preserve the state-of-the-art surface through Walla Walla's four seasons.
The project took place over the entire summer and was made possible, in part, by a large gift from Lois and Earl Dusenbery, a grant of $15,000 from the USTA, and generous donations from several alumni and friends of the college.
The courts are bordered by century-old trees and rustic buildings, creating a picturesque setting that serves as a symbol of Whitman's integration of academics and athletics. The courts are, also, a hub of activity. Many of those passing by stop to watch the play occurring on the courts.
The increased number of courts provides the opportunity for more teaching lessons and greater access to recreation for students, faculty and the local tennis community.
"I am absolutely thrilled with the new courts for our teams," added Whitman men's head coach, Jeff Northam, "and hope that in the near future both of our programs can host NCAA postseason events."
The recent renovation marks the second time in the last two-plus decades that the outdoor courts have undergone a major overhaul. In the summer of 1990, the courts received a new surface and lighting system.
The outdoor courts, with Whitman acting as the host school, have been the site of the USTA/ITA Regional Championships and the Northwest Conference postseason tournament.
