Women's Soccer Upended By Whitworth In Midweek Contest

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College women's soccer team had hoped to carry its momentum into a midweek contest versus Whitworth but it wasn't to be as the Blues fell 4-2 to the Pirates in Northwest Conference action on Wednesday night at the Whitman Athletics Complex.

Gabriella Coprivnicar scored twice and added an assist for the Bucs who trailed Whitman (1-12-1, 1-10-1 NWC) in the first half. Hanna Lynch posted two saves and gave up the four Whitworth goals with Kate Nelson recording three saves in 90 minutes for the Bucs.

"Tonight was a tough loss," said head coach Michelle Voiland. "We got off to a great start, taking control of the match. It was an absolute battle and exactly the physical play you would expect from this rivalry game. They scored and gained the momentum. We managed to stay in the fight and pulled back to 3-2, where we had to open up and really push to go for the tie. I'm proud of this group's continuous courage, dedication and drive. We will learn from this, hold our heads high and get after it again this weekend."

Whitman jumped on the scoreboard early with a goal in the 18th minute. After a corner kick taken by the Blues, Whitman fought for the loose ball inside the penalty area which found Chaney Heinbaugh's foot. She slotted the shot inside the upper left corner to give the Blues the lead.

Whitworth responded with a goal just before halftime. In a congested area outside the penalty area, Ireland Eaton struck a shot through a wall of players toward goal. Unable to get a clear view of the strike, Lynch was caught flat-footed as the ball made its way inside the far post.

Coprivnicar scored a magnificent goal to put Whitworth ahead in the second half. She won possession on the right flank just outside the penalty area. Dribbling central, she beat several Whitman defenders and finished a bended shot inside the far post past a diving Lynch.

The Bucs added another to seemingly ice the game but Whitman scored late. Lise Arrouye was fouled on a cross into the box and earned herself a penalty kick. She stepped up and converted the spot kick to make it a 3-2 game. The Bucs, though, pushed the lead back up to two goals with a goal just before full time.

Whitman is on the road this weekend, first visiting Willamette on Saturday, Oct. 22. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m.
