Women's Soccer Edged By UPS In NWC Opener

TACOMA, Wash. - The Whitman College women's soccer team entered the day in search of its first win, but the Blues would be denied in a narrow 1-0 defeat to Puget Sound, Saturday in the Northwest Conference openers for both teams.

This was a hard fought match," said head coach Michelle Voiland. "We definitely showed up ready to battle a very talented and physical UPS squad. I thought we defended well all over the pitch throughout the match and just needed to be a little sharper in the final third. We strung together some fantastic sequences today and the hard work in training has started to really show on the field. Now we focus on the next big battle at PLU tomorrow."

Though the Loggers had registered more shots, the Blues had every chance to take down one of the league's top squads. Only a UPS goal in the 47th minute from Kylee Roath prevented the game from heading to extra time and a possible Whitman result.

The Blues posted five shots, forcing Logger keeper Chaylea Tome into two saves. Hanna Lynch and Emily Badgley each played a half for the Blues. Lynch posted a clean sheet with one save in the first 45 and Badgley posted two saves while surrendering the game's lone goal.

The Blues take the field once more this weekend when they visit the aforementioned Lutes on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
