Men's Soccer Falls To Willamette For First Loss

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College men's soccer team saw its first blemish of the 2021 season on Sunday, coming at the hands of Willamette University 2-0 in Northwest Conference play at the Whitman Athletic Complex.

In what many might consider an upset against the nation's 25th-ranked team, the Bearcats scored a goal in each half to hand Whitman its first loss and a split on NWC opening weekend.

Lucas Haigh posted one save for the Blues but came off his line well to thwart many Willamette goal-scoring opportunities. Pierluca Carnovale was impressive in net for the Bearcats, registering three saves off nine Whitman shots. The Blues dominated for long stretches of the game but Carnovale, time and again, successfully dealt with numerous Whitman scoring chances.

The Bearcats struck first with a goal in the 23rd minute. Haigh's goal kick to the right flank was mishandled with the giveaway resulting in a Willamette counter attack. Ardam Baronian played a ball across the top of the goal box to Sean Kim who scored with a well-struck ball to the near post.

Willamette got its second after an unfortunate foul by Edwin Romero led to a Willamette free kick at the top of the box. Haigh made an initial save off a well struck shot from Luke Varav, but Mack Velde punched home the rebound and lifted his team to a two-goal lead.

The Blues play their first conference road games next weekend, playing at PLU on Saturday and UPS on Sunday.
