Men's Soccer Falls To Willamette In Wild Affair

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - The Whitman College men's soccer team nearly erased a late two-goal deficit, but came up short in the final moments in a 4-3 loss to Willamette in Northwest Conference play on Saturday at Hayner Field.

In a game that saw all seven goals scored in the second half, the Blues (5-7-5, 4-4-4 NWC) found themselves trailing 4-1 with under five minutes to play. Whitman drew a foul outside the penalty area and Oliver Dickson took the free kick, delivering a perfect ball to McCoy Hennes. Hennes headed the ball back across into the far post to cut the deficit to two goals.

Less than two minutes later, Dickson again found Whitman's would be goalscorer. He played a ball to Riki Kobayashi outside the corner of the penalty. Kobayashi turned and hit a ball that dipped under the far post bar and all of a sudden the Blues trailed by only a single goal.

Whitman had possession in the final third in the closing moments but was unable to find the equalizer.

Bernie Jones made four saves for the Blues and Pierluca Carnovale posted five saves on 15 Whitman shots for the Bearcats (7-9-1 7-5-1 NWC).

The Blues will play their home finale on Sunday, Oct. 29 and will honor their seniors with a special ceremony prior to kickoff.
