Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Falls To Willamette In NWC Action

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Jander Cline delivered a game and career-high 25 points to go along with nine rebounds, Isaiah Amato added 14 points and five assists, but it came in defeat as the Whitman College men's basketball team fell 91-84 to Willamette in Northwest Conference action on Saturday at the Sherwood Center.

Jai Deshpande and Alex Pape both chipped in 11 points for the Blues (4-3, 1-1 NWC) who couldn't match an impressive shooting night for the Bearcats (55%). Gavin Rippere led the way for Willamette with 19 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Jack Boydell shared team-high honors also with 19 points and Caleb Moore chipped in 17 more and a game-high six assists.

The Blues held the lead on several occasions in the first half before trailing by nine points at the break. D'ante Dean scored to put Willamette up by four, but the Blues responded with a 7-0 run capped by a Pape three pointer. Cline later added back-to-back triples to push the lead to 25-21 with 8:42 remaining.

The Bearcats regained the momentum in the back half of the first half. Moore and Dean scored on consecutive possessions to put the Bearcats up by four, then a Boydell layup helped extend to a 41-34 lead with 3:30 to play and eventually a nine-point halftime lead.

Willamette quickly pushed the advantage to double digits in the second half. Back-to-back layups from Boydell and another from Moore put the Bearcats up 53-41 and forced a Whitman timeout.

The lead hovered around double digits for a good portion of the second half before the Blues began to chip away. Cline scored to make it a six point game, then later converted a three-point play to shave the lead to 69-66 with 7:01 to play. Willamette again went up by double digits, but three pointers from Pape and Cline made it a five-point game with 2:04 to play. The Blues would come no closer, however, as the Bearcats made their free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Whitman is back in action on Friday, Dec. 8 against UC Santa Cruz. Tipoff at the Sherwood Center is set for 8:00 p.m.
