Men's Basketball Pulls Away Late Against Misericordia

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Jai Desphande led all scorers with a season-high 27 points and the Whitman College men's basketball team ran away late with a 94-82 win over Misericordia on Thursday afternoon at the Sherwood Center.

Deshpande did his scoring on an efficient 11-16 from the field and a scorching 5-6 three-point shooting performance. Jander Cline added 19 points and Ali Efe Isik flirted with a double double with 18 points and a game-high eighth rebounds.

Nate Kreitzer led the Cougars with 21 points and Joseph Baldachino chipped in 17 more.

Both teams shot the ball well, hitting over 50% of their field goals as well as three pointers. The Blues still led most of the way but it took an 11-2 run in the later stages of the second half to pull away for the win. Back-to-back Cline jumpers put the Blues up five points, but consecutive hoops from Kevin Lazdowsky helped even the game at 65-65 with 10:48 to play.

Whitman then responded with its big run kick-started by back-to-back buckets from Alex Pape. A three point fest then ensued. Nick Prociak brought the deficit back under 10 points with his three pointer, but Efe Isik responded with a three ball of his own to regain the double-digit lead. Isaiah Amato and Deshpande added to the frenzy, both nailing triples for an 87-73 advantage with 5:02 to play.

Cline's layup all but sealed the win as the Blues went up 16 points with just over three minutes to play.

Whitman returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 28 against Elmhurst. Tipoff at the Sherwood Center is set for 7:00 p.m.
