Men's Basketball Takes Down Willamette

SALEM, Ore. - Jai Deshpande led all scorers and four teammates in double figures, Jander Cline registered a double double with 17 points and 11 rebounds and the Whitman College men's basketball team took down Willamette 83-67 in Northwest Conference action on Friday night.

Isaiah Amato and Ali Efe Isik added 14 and 13 points, respectively, for the Blues who pulled away midway through the second half. The Blues shot it well to the tune of 48% from the field and, aided by Cline's 3-6 from beyond the arc, 43% in three pointers.

Josiah Frank led the Bearcats with 18 points off the bench on 7-15 shooting.

Whitman led by four points at halftime but slowly started to separate itself from the Bearcats as the second half wore on. The Blues extended the lead to 12 points after holding Willamette without a field goal for a near-five minute span. Gavin Rippere ended the drought with a bucket but Grant Hunt fired back with a three pointer on the next possession.

The Blues continued to hold a small double digit lead until the defense locked in again. Willamette went scoreless over a three-minute span while Cline nailed a three pointer to give Whitman a 66-49 lead with 9:18 to play. The Blues never let the Bearcats back in the game the rest of the way.

Whitman led much of the first half as Efe Isik's layup put his team up 20-13 with 10:04 to play. Willamette rallied and reeled off 10 unanswered points highlighted by a Josiah three pointer. The Blues bounced back after Cline hit from the floor and Deshpande converted a three-point play the old fashioned way. Whitman pushed the lead back up to seven points before Josiah's late three pointer made it a 42-38 score at the break.

Whitman closes the weekend on Saturday, Jan. 27 at Pacific. Tipoff is set for 6:00 p.m.
