Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Jai Deshpande Scores 1,000th Career Point; Men's Basketball Falls To Whitworth

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Jander Cline scored a career-high 27 points, but it came in a loss as the Whitman College men's basketball team fell to Whitworth 92-74 in Northwest Conference action on Tuesday night at the Sherwood Center.

Despite the loss, Jai Deshpande reached new heights by scoring his 1,000th career point which came on a drive to the hoop in the early moments of the game. Deshpande added 16 points for the Blues (14-6, 8-3 NWC) with Aidan von Buchwaldt chipping in eight more off the bench.

The Battle of the Whits featured the league's top two teams but it was the Pirates (13-7, 9-2 NWC) who left the game alone at the top of the conference standings. Jojo Anderson led the charge with a game-high 28 points for the Bucs who scored 60 points on a scorching 71% shooting in the second half to win going away.

The game was as advertised in the first half. Back-to-back layups from Cline, the second of which resulted in a three-point play, put the Blues up 8-6 with 16:15 to play. Later in the half, Jerry Twenge put the Bucs up two with a corner three pointer, but Ali Efe Isik regained the lead for Whitman with four straight points.

The Bucs led by three points with just over eight minutes to play in the half, but Whitman snatched the momentum after running off seven unanswered points to take a 27-23 lead. The teams traded three pointers down the stretch but the Blues took that four-point lead into the break.

The second half saw Whitworth grab a firm hold of the game in the blink of an eye. The Bucs went on a 15-1 run which saw Anderson drain two three pointers to put his team ahead by double digits. The lead ballooned to 20 points as the Bucs cruised to the finish line.

The Blues return to the court this Friday, Feb. 2 against Lewis & Clark. Tipoff at the Sherwood Center is set for 6:00 p.m.
